CALL FOR PAPER

CALL FOR PAPER

BACKGROUND

Tourism has grown and developed into one of the most desirable sectors for a country’s economic development. This sector is known to have a very broad multiplier effect due to its scope and attractiveness. The scope of the tourism sector is more related to its ability to stimulate the development of other sectors such as hospitality, transport, increased agricultural and industrial products, increased creative economy, cultural development, improved infrastructure, and increased income or foreign exchange. Tourism is one of the sectors that can accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to improve people’s well-being. The 17-point SDGs are an urgent call for all developed and developing countries to end poverty and other deprivations with strategies to improve health and education, reduce inequality and boost economic growth, accompanied by efforts to tackle climate change, and work to preserve oceans and the environment.

While tourism has many benefits, it also has negative impacts, including vulnerability to global economic fluctuations and dependence on the tourism sector, changes in economic structure, income inequality between regions, environmental degradation, exploitation of endangered animals, disruption of culture and social order, increased waste and pollution, and others. Therefore, sustainable tourism practices must be implemented by all tourism stakeholders. These stakeholders include the government, the private sector, financial institutions, the media, academics, business actors, both SMES players and creative economy actors in the tourism sector (pentahelix), and also tourism actors (tourists). All stakeholders play their respective roles and are closely interlinked in the implementation of sustainable tourism practices. It is important that the benefits of tourism also address and fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals include: GOAL 1: Without poverty; GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by creating sustainable jobs, encouraging responsible tourism development, and promoting fair trade practices; GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by promoting environmentally friendly practices, reducing waste, and supporting local businesses; GOAL 13: Climate actions by minimizing our carbon footprint through energy-efficient practices and promoting responsible transport and energy use; GOAL 14 & 15: Life under water & life on land by protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources and minimising pollution in the marine and terrestrial environment. Achieving these goals requires the awareness, active participation and innovative pentahelix collaboration of all tourism stakeholders.
